The anticipation over the release of Destiny has reached fever pitch. With a $500 million budget this game already had a huge following even before it hit the shelves.

But I’m sorry to say that this game did not deliver. In fact, it left me deeply frustrated at the wasted opportunity.

The Action Was Great

The action in this game was, on many occasions, amazing – and left my heart pounding out of the side of my chest. With armies of aliens to fight through there is hardly a spare moment without adrenaline. It reminds me so much of the good times I had in Halo.

Some of the action is compelling. But what about the story line?

Yes, if grinding through endless mobs is what you’re looking for you’ve definitely found a title that will excite you.

Great Graphics and Music

The graphics and MUSIC were incredible. You really get your money’s worth.

The art team has exceeded themselves and managed to produce something that is truly more than the sum of its parts. You’ll enjoy stunning skyboxes, day-night cycles and incredible texture work.

Oh and by the way, Peter Dinklage from Game of Thrones provides much of the voice acting!

Lack of competent Story Telling

Unfortunately there are a huge number of essential elements that are missing from this game. There literally isn’t a perceptible start, middle and end to this game. Gameplay without context.

To my trained eye it looks like the actual story is designed to be released in DLC expansions. Probably the expansion leaflet that I found in the disc case was a strong clue about what I was about to discover about this game.

Nothing is ever explained. Nothing. You won’t learn why your character has been brought back to life after thousands of years. You won’t know why you are fighting aliens and you won’t learn anything about what is coming.

Just wait for the DLC content, and be quiet.

Bad Level Design

There are only 4 planets. And the levels on these planets are repetitive and entirely uninspiring. You will find yourself spotting the same mobs spawning in the same places over and over again after just a few hours of game play.

Deja-vu is a big part of the gaming experience with Destiny.

Worse still this even extends to a feeling that the game designers were downright lazy when designing levels. For example, you will find yourself spawning in the same places over and over again. Why not move the spawn points to different areas on the maps. Then at least you could imagine that you were in a different area of the world somehow.

The Ending

I’m not going to give you any spoilers (if that is even possible). What I will say is that you will face a boss that you’ve faced earlier in the game – just much stronger.

I think you get the idea.

Conclusion

If you’re looking for an repetitive shooting game where you get to kill endless hordes of mobs then this is the game for you.

However, if you’re looking for deep, varied content with an exciting storyline then I would look elsewhere.

Perhaps, if we’re lucky, we’ll be able to buy that in the DLC expansion pack.
